Recently, American and Canadian fighter jets intercepted a squadron of Russian and Chinese bombers off the coast of Alaska. This is the first time that Chinese strategic bombers have been detected so close to U.S. territory.
The aircraft were spotted in Alaska’s Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ), which is an area extending beyond the usual territorial airspace, used for identifying all aircraft as a security measure.
The interception took place within international airspace, and the aircraft did not breach U.S. or Canadian sovereign airspace. Videos released by Russia’s Defense Ministry show the bombers, accompanied by Su-30 and Su-35 fighter escorts, flying over the North Pacific.
U.S. and Canadian fighters monitored the mission, which lasted around five hours and covered the Chukchi and Bering seas.
According to statements from both nations involved, the operation was not intended to threaten any third parties.
