Planes always let passengers on and off from the left side. This is not just a random choice.
There are good reasons for it.
Airports are set up for left-side boarding. The bridges that connect the terminal to the plane only work on the left side.
This makes things easier and less confusing.
Safety is a big reason too. The right side of the plane is very busy.
Workers fill up the fuel, load bags, and bring food there. It would be risky to have people walking around all that.
This left-side rule comes from old ship practices. Ships use the words “port” for left and “starboard” for right.
In the past, ships always docked on their left side. People got on and off there. Planes just kept this tradition going.
Here’s a quick look at why planes board on the left:
- Airport bridges only connect to the left side
- Keeps people away from busy work on the right side
- Follows old ship boarding rules
Even when planes use stairs instead of bridges, left-side boarding is safer. It keeps people far from any dangers on the right side.
Most pilots sit on the left too. This helps them see how close the plane’s wing is to the building when they park.
Boarding on one set side makes air travel smoother. It’s easier for workers and safer for everyone.
